Section Info:
This class will explore the crossroads of biology (agriculture, human health and ecological issues), international development, international business, information and communication technologies, and research for development. Students will gain an understanding of: (1) the fundamental factors that influence decisions taken in international development; (2) the constraints and cross-multinational differences in the developing world that affect the socially disadvantaged individuals; (3) the positive potential that technology, crowd sourcing, and the World Wide Web have to revolutionize access to information for these one billion low literate learners in the world, and (4) the different models and networking channels that provide solutions for educational gaps including how to solve the barriers of many languages and cultural groups. Much of this will be discussed within the context of biological systems.

Coral Reef Field Ecology
Section Info:
A field course to coral reefs in Belize. An introduction to the taxonomic groups, identification, and natural history of the vertebrates and invertebrates that inhabit and form coral reefs. Ecosystem processes and conservation of coral reefs will also be discussed. The field trip to Belize will be Sunday May 17-Sunday May 24, 2015. Cost of the field trip is estimated to be $1950 and will be borne by the student. Prerequisite: IB 150 and consent of instructor. Student must be able to swim. Comprehensive introduction to the tools and skills required to transition from undergraduate to graduate school or a professional job in science. Emphasis is on acquiring skills required for independent scientific research, including how to propose and conduct a research project and how to communicate results by writing publication-quality manuscripts and presenting talks and posters at meetings.
