Section Title:
Contemporary Korean Society
Section Info:
Topic: Korea at a Crossroad. This course is designed to explore contemporary Korean society with understanding of its history and culture. After getting familiar with the key historical, often tumultuous, moments in the 20th century that inform and still affect both South and North Korea today (such as colonialism, the Korean War, and the Cold War), we will examine the struggle of Koreans for individual and collective identities, the road to modernization, and participation in global community. To understand the complexity and dynamics of Korean society and culture, we will take diverse perspectives on modernity, consumption, family, gender, class, youth and education, cosmopolitan yearning, and popular culture. Through the interdisciplinary readings of scholarly articles, literature, and ethnographies, this course will broaden and deepen our understanding of Korea and reflect on our own backgrounds and cultures in relation to these histories.
