GER 496 Special Topics German Studies: Freud-Nietzsche-Kafka Historical overview of central topics in Western thought via texts by Freud, Nietzsche, and Kafka. How do psychoanalysis, philosophy, and literature influence how we see ourselves and the world? Exploration of visions of hope and redemption, self and community, art and life. Prerequisites: None. Open to undergraduates and graduate students. Readings and discussions in English. Students in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures are encouraged to read at least some of the assigned texts in the original German, and to complete at least some writing assignments in German. Graduate students: see instructor for options for earning four credits for this course. Meets with PHIL 444 and CWL 496
