Debates in French Culture and Politics. Several years ago, Gerald Graff argued in his book Beyond the Culture Wars that "teaching the conflicts can revitalize American education". Taking its cue from Graff's recommendation, this course will examine major debates in French literary and cultural politics with the help of essays, articles, stories, and plays by writers ranging from Ronsard to de Beauvoir and Voltaire to Leila Sebbar. Instances of the French "culture wars" will include the birth of a national literary tradition, the religious wars of the 16th century, the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, the Enlightenment, the Dreyfus Affair, the Cold War, decolonization and the loss of empire, the rise of the mass media, Republicanism and laicit, 9/11 and the war in Iraq, and the recent attacks on Charlie-Hebdo's offices. Readings and discussions in French.
