Section Title:
Special Topic Lang Acquisition
Section Info:
Psych 598CF Special Topics in Language Acquisition The role of distributional learning in language acquisition and processing In the first several years of life, children learn thousands of words, work out the structure of their language, and at the same time develop an efficient processing system for understanding sentences online. This seminar will explore the role of distributional learning in the development of lexical and grammatical knowledge, and in the refinement of the sentence processing system. In readings and discussions we will explore (a) what kinds of distributional facts infants, children, and adults can learn about words, (b) to what degree they can do so independent of knowing what those words mean, (c) to what degree distributional learning is supported by semantic knowledge about words, and (d) how the structure of natural discourses shapes what can be learned. To do so, we will read key papers in the adult and developmental psycholinguistics literature. How much we read about particular sub-topics (e.g., verb bias, syntactic priming, non-adjacent dependency learning, the sources of individual differences in distributional learning, computational as well as experimental work) can be adjusted to suit the interests of the seminar group.
