Urban Environmental Equity
Section Info:
Students will work in teams to investigate relationships between stream contamination and social vulnerability in the Lincoln Park-Milwaukee Estuary and Grand Calumet Research areas near Chicago. Students will work to develop and execute a research plan to produce new knowledge using quantitative GIS and qualitative video-based interview methods. This course is designed as an intensive workshop which will demand a substantial amount of time outside of class. This course has no prerequisites aside from graduate-level standing. Students are expected to complete Human Subjects Training prior to the first class meeting. Students will benefit from some prior knowledge of experience in GIS, community development, intensive interviewing, and/or urban stream contaminant removal, although these are not a required prerequisites.

Air is an inevitable substance for life, yet the increases in world population, the transformation of the Earth?s landscapes, and the growth of industry have resulted in an increase in atmospheric pollution. Generally this pollution is a major consequence of modern society and has serious consequences for the health of human beings and severely affects natural ecosystems. This course will address questions such as: What have we learned about atmospheric pollution over the course of industrial history? How does today?s increased population and industrial use impact the atmosphere? What does the future hold in terms of prevention of atmospheric pollution?

Nat Resources Law & Policy

Using the case study method and discussion problems, graduate students in this course will study how laws in the U.S. regulate the use of natural resources, including public ownership and preservation of natural resources through other federal and state public lands. Also examines major federal environmental statues designed to protect natural resources, including the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and federal acts related to forest, national parks, and wilderness protection. Students will asynchronously watch recordings of NRES 425 class meetings and participate in an additional graduate student only discussion session on Monday evenings.
