Section Title:
Wildlife Management Tanzania
Section Info:
Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL) restrictions and assessments apply, see http://www.citl.illinois.edu. Enrollment requires the successful application to the program at www.studyabroad.illinois.edu. This course presents students with hands-on experience in the conservation of natural and cultural resources across wilderness, rural, and urban regions of Tanzania. Students will attend courses at the world-renowned College of African Wildlife Management ? Mweka (Mweka) and participate in selected projects that reflect the multifaceted demands facing conservationists in Africa. Classroom experiences will provide the foundation for further studies at the interface of ecology and wildlife management. Scientific principles and human dimensions are used to explain current strategies and techniques for managing natural and cultural resources. The curriculum will focus on how changes in land use and resource availability in Tanzanian ecosystems can be managed to assist local communities while conserving biodiversity. Experiencing the socio-political and ecological variables in Tanzania will yield an understanding of culture and life that is vital to successful conservation efforts. 4 pre-departure meetings will occur April 7-May 2, and the tentative travel dates are July 11-August 6. Students in the course are required to participate in the study abroad experience, the fees for which are expected to cost approximately $5,500 plus airfare.

Section Title:
Soil Science for Resource Mgmt
Section Info:
Among the natural resources, soil is considered very slowly renewable, yet it sustains life as we know it. Soils are formed from geologic parent materials by the long-term actions of climate, living organisms, and topography. Wise use and management of soils is crucial to agriculture, forestry, engineering, ecology, and general environmental science. In this class, we will take a Pedological view of soils, emphasizing basic soil chemistry and physics, with a focus towards the more environmental aspects. The course is intended for individuals with a minimal knowledge of soil science studying to be professional environmentalists. Consequently, emphasis in the class will be on discovering the importance of soils and their roles in the environment. Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL) restrictions and assessments apply, see http://www.citl.illinois.edu. Required Text: Elements of the Nature and Properties of Soils (Brady and Weil) 3rd ed Online scheduled class sessions require each student to have high speed internet access and either a headset with microphone or an external microphone and speakers so they may participate in the class discussions. Wireless internet is not recommended.
