Action Research Seminar

Credit: 3 hours.

Introduction to applied action research within the social sciences and humanities with the subject of research selected from partner organizations in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, and surrounding communities. Students establish a research question, conduct fieldwork using qualitative and/or quantitative methods, and complete a project of sufficient quality for publication or presentation.

May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours in subsequent terms. Prerequisite: Junior standing or consent of instructor.

Open to graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines, students develop skills in community arts pedagogy, arts administration, and participatory action research. Through collaborative work, EAL students develop and offer a series of free community arts projects that offer young people from low-income backgrounds participation in arts inquiry programming. Students attend weekly seminars on Wednesday and Fridays and offer two-hour after school arts workshops on Wednesday afternoons until 5:00 at sites in Urbana-Champaign, including Figure One, the Independent Media Center, and the Champaign Public Library. In this course students design and facilitate a weekly arts (music, visual art, dance, drama) experience for youth detained at the Champaign County Detention Center. Course is intended for music education majors, art education majors, theatre majors, dance majors, and community arts minors, but all majors are welcome to enroll. Weekly class MEETS AND IS HELD AT THE DETENTION CENTER. Restriction(s): Not intended for students with Freshman class standing.

We will partner with Community groups in North Champaign on projects they have identified as important to them. Students will work in interdisciplinary teams, building on the outcomes achieved in previous semesters working with the 5th and Hill and the North First Street groups. No prior knowledge of design, fine arts or urban planning is required.Students will present their work to the public in a required symposium. One project will look at ways to organize the work space of a bicycle repair co-op; the other two projects will design and build minor facilities for two different neighborhood/urban garden sites.

Students will be involved in analysis of survey data, communications, design of promotional materials, multimedia documentation and event planning.
