Section Info: Almost as soon as the term ?Enlightenment? was applied to the intellectual movement of the early modern period, writers began to question what exactly it was. We will look at ?Enlightenment? from a global perspective. By reading across a variety of literary forms and by closely analyzing a range of works from both Western and non-Western traditions, we will explore how literature responded to the changing and expanding world of 1600 to 1800. By the end of this course, you will be able to read a wide variety of early modern texts with comprehension and enjoyment, you will have a greater capacity for understanding texts that depict unfamiliar times and places, and you will have a richer understanding of how the modern self came into being.
