NMR of Macromolecules: Time-Dependent Theory (2 credit hours) This course is offered the second half of the semester. This course covers advanced NMR theory from the perspective of time-dependent quantum mechanics, from construction of the spin Hamiltonian and the phenomenological Bloch equations to formalized product operator and coherent averaging (average Hamiltonian) theories. Students will develop the ability to analyze NMR experiments in the modern literature and to design new pulse sequences through both analytic and numerical theory, including the use of software such as Mathematica, SIMPSON and SPINEVOLUTION. This course is suitable for advanced undergraduates or graduate students in Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics, Physics or Biophysics. Prerequisite: CHEM540 (graduate-level Quantum Mechanics) or consent of instructor. Students are encouraged to enroll concurrently in CHEM542 (Quantum Mechanics and Spectroscopy).
