Class will meet in room 305 MSEB Friday's 12:00-12:50 pm. Registration is restricted to students accepted to the CHEM 492 Study Abroad program for Summer 2014. Expected dates abroad are July 15 through August 7. This seminar explores, through readings and lecture/discussions, the historical development of major concepts of chemical structure, including the concept of the chemical element, atomic theory, and theories of chemical bonding and structure, from both philosophical and scientific perspectives. In addition to regular assigned readings from various selected sources, students will be expected to participate in discussion and to write frequent short response papers based on the readings and lectures, as well as one more substantial term paper on a topic to be agreed upon with the instructor. This course can be used to satisfy elective credit for the Chemistry major, but does not satisfy the Advanced Credit requirement. .
