Additional course materials fee may apply. See Class Schedule. 1 to 3 undergraduate hours. 1 to 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 9 undergraduate hours or 12 graduate hours if topics vary. Prerequisite: Senior standing or consent of instructor.

Credit: 3 hours Section Title: Artist Books Section Info: Special Topics: Artist Books: Creating conceptually driven works in various constructs of the book form. Students will explore ways of thinking through a variety of historical and contemporary methods and traditions. This course encourages connections between content and form while developing heightened sensitivity to materials, processes and presentation. Digital and traditional routes are used to explore both the physical and the conceptual implications of the ways things are made. Projects that intersect with work developed in other studio and design areas will be encouraged. Undergraduate section. Meets in room 22 Noble Hall. Moving beyond the wood block print, students will experiment with a variety of traditional and contemporary relief printmaking techniques, including hand carving, letterpress, and digital technologies incorportaing use of the laser cutter and CNC router. Projects that relate to work developed in other studio and design areas will be encouraged. Hands-on making will be combined with discussion of the historical arc of printmaking and unique conceptual concerns of print media. This course will explore a range of materials, including plastic, linoleum, and wood, and works produced will range in scale from hand-held to wall-sized. Undergraduate section. Open to graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines, students develop skills in community arts pedagogy, arts administration, and participatory action research. Through collaborative work, EAL students develop and offer a series of free community arts projects that offer young people from low-income backgrounds participation in arts inquiry programming. Students attend weekly seminars on Wednesday and Fridays and offer two-hour after school arts workshops on Wednesday afternoons until 5:00 at sites in Urbana-Champaign, including Figure One, the Independent Media Center, and the Champaign Public Library. This is not a teacher training course. The principal aim of this course is to pool together and examine a range of teaching practices and philosophies which emerge as best practices in the art and design school. This course is designed for graduate students who plan to make teaching part of their professional goals once their MFA is completed. Through a mutual understanding that teaching at this level is varied, complex, and situational, the participants in this course will undertake a collective research project which will open up a critical discourse about teaching art and design at the college level. Important text that examine the history, philosophies, practices and trajectories of the contemporary art school will be examined by the group.
