Spanish Cultural Studies II

Credit: 3 hours.

Critical analysis of selected historical events, artistic production, debates, symbols and values representative of Spanish (Iberian) cultures in the modern and contemporary periods. Particular emphasis on the relationship between cultural practices and national identities, as well as on contextualized analysis of different types of cultural phenomena.

May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum of 6 hours, if topics vary. Prerequisite: SPAN 254.

Non-registered students are not allowed to sit in or audit. TOPIC TITLE: "The social and ideological liberalization in the long 20th century" This course aims to familiarize students with various aspects of Spanish culture from the end of the nineteenth century to the present time. Different manifestations of cultural production in Spain will be examined ? cinema, art, and literature - with special emphasis on cinematic production. Through the exploration of these (written and visual) texts, a variety of topics will be addressed, such as women?s role in society, the influence of the Catholic Church, the Spanish Civil War, the post-war dictatorship, the transition to democracy, representations of the city versus the country, and immigration and diversity. All of these are connected by a central theme: the passage from an oppressive to a more liberal society. The objective of the course will be that, through an analysis of the various texts, students develop a critical knowledge of various aspects of contemporary Spain. Furthermore, students will be required to demonstrate an ability to articulate relatively sophisticated ideas in written and oral form.
