PreReq 250 or 254 will count towards Advanced Literature or Culture. Students must meet the prerequisite requirements for this course (found in the Catalog Entry) or will be told to drop on the first day of classes. Non-registered students are not allowed to sit in or audit. This course will focus on the analysis of literary texts and films representative of cultural production in Spain from the last decades of the nineteenth century until the early twenty first century. The main themes covered will be: the relations between the sexes, the role of women in the home and the workplace, family and marriage, and sexual and psychological oppression. In connection, more specifically, with the post-civil war period and the Franco regime, themes such as censorship and the role of religion in Spanish society will be examined. Special attention will be given to the socio-historical and cultural context in which both literary texts and films were produced. The objective of the course is to help students develop critical and analytical skills as well as an ability to articulate fairly sophisticated ideas in written and oral form.
