Introduces students to key issues of, major theoretical approaches to, and current debates about the cultural function of films. Course addresses theories of spectatorship, the politics of pleasure, the culture of entertainment, and the cinematic construction of race, class, and gender.

This course will trace the role of censorship in film and the ways in which censorship has come to play a critical role in the cultural function of films. Examining a series of films banned across the globe, the course will address the ways in which film has become a battleground in the "culture wars" around sex, political ideology, gender, race, revolution, class, violence, and pleasure.
