Section Title:
Introduction to Visual Studies
Section Info:
This course is designed to teach critical skills in the analysis of visual media. It will focus on introducing students to the core concepts and analytic methods of visual culture. We will study how still images and images with sounds onscreen create meanings. One of the core premises of the course is that images matter and are integral in the formation of consumer desire, spatial experience, gender/sexual identities, race and ethnicity, aesthetic production and the making of power and political truth claims. Students will have the opportunity to link concepts discussed in class to practice through creating a photo story.
