Investigation of the impact of one literature upon another, or of some specific works upon others (the role of English literature in continental Europe, the influence of Russian novelists on French and German writers, etc.).

May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours if topics vary.

Class meets with SLAV 525 in 3024 FLB. The concept of a unit of time has begun to falter and it is no accident that contemporary mathematics has advanced the principle of relativity." CWL 571 explores time, memory, and perception as these concepts were formulated in the early 20th century by literary authors, scientists, and theoreticians from Russia, Germany, France, and Britain. The writers to be examined include Henri Bergson, Sigmund Freud, Walter Benjamin, Virginia Woolf, David Bergelson, and Osip Mandelshtam. No knowledge of Russian required.
