TITLE: "Conversation Analysis of Everyday and Classroom Interaction" In this course, we will use conversation analysis (CA) in order to investigate the similarities and differences between everyday conversation (around the dinner table, on the phone, etc.) and classroom interaction. After a brief introduction to the methodology of conversation analysis, we analyze practices and functions of: openings, closings, repair (negotiation of meaning), questions, assessments, etc. We will also discuss how the participation framework affects the interaction and what this means for ?communicative language classroom.? The course is intended for students with and without prior knowledge of CA. An effort will be made to include articles about the various languages within the SLATE program.
