Section Title:
Brazilian Families Study Tour
Section Info:
Family Strengths and Challenges in Brazil. Course will focus on contemporary urban Brazilian families and will include a preparatory class during the second half of the spring semester to acquaint students with Brazilian history, culture and current social conditions followed by a 16-day tour (tentatively scheduled for July 31- August 16, 2013) to Recife and Rio de Janerio. Activities will include observational and experimental assignments (e.g., observations in public settings, analysis of the built environment), field trips to institutions working with families, participation in social and cultural events, and regular discussions. There is no formal language requirement, but students are strongly encouraged to take basic Portuguese before the trip. Application and instructor interview/approval required. Learning Exp in South Africa
Section Info:
Volunteer Experience in Cape Town, South Africa. Eight-week preparatory course examines history, economics, and political events leading up to the demise of the apartheid system, including the role of African youth in the struggle. Experience in Cape Town includes intensive study, discussion, field trips and experience with local cultural events, as well as volunteer work with community organizations and care of chronically ill children and those orphaned by the AIDS crisis. Instructor approval required - contact Jan Brooks at dickson@illinois.edu or the ACES Study Abroad Office at 333-3638 for application. Application due by October 15, 2012. Additional fee approximately $5,500.00. Approximate travel dates May 15, 2013 through June 5, 2013.
