Examines how the regularities in language use that we think of as 'grammar' emerge from communicative needs in discourse. Focuses on analysis of grammatical phenomena in East Asian languages. Requires advanced knowledge of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Prerequisite: LING 430; junior standing or consent of instructor.
