Topic: Transnational Migration in East Asia Meets with EALC 550 The late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries have been a time a time of large-scale movements of people in the world. East Asia, in particular, has played a unique role in this story of global movement. For example, countries like Japan and Korea, which began as sending nations?sending migrants to places like the U.S., Asia and Latin America?have in recent years become receiving nations?attracting migrants from all over the world. And centuries of exclusionary laws set up to control immigration to the US from Asia have come to form the basis of immigration policies used still today in the U.S., South Korea and Japan. This course examines current and historic trends in transnational migration and uses the example of East Asia to explore the causes, continuation and impact of the migration of people across national borders. Topics include marriage migration, transnational families and adoption, clandestine and forced migration, the impact of migration on gender roles, education, nationalism and ethnic identity, as well as immigration law, surveillance and the strengthening of borders. We will use ethnographies, articles, feature films, documentaries and literature to explore issues of transnational migration between and beyond countries such as North and South Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong and Tawian. You will have the opportunity to do a multi-media migration project, which incorporates interviews and archival research.
