Topic: Still Life: Painting and the Material World. Images of objects, both natural and human-made, arose as a distinct genre in the visual culture of the Netherlands during the 16-17th centuries. This seminar will explore what and how still life signified for its diverse audiences in this period by investigating its multiple discursive frameworks. These include: notions of nature and representation; emergent capitalism and the global trade in commodities; nascent cultures of collecting and connoisseurship; theories of art and of the artist; concepts of beauty, virtue, and pleasure; nationalism and civic identity; debates on the role of images as a medium for religious devotion and moral instruction; and the practices of early modern science. Our work will entail encounters with a range of art historical methods and theories.
