This course is part of a larger project known as "Ethnography of the University Initiative," or "EUI," which has been in place now for several years. In this program, faculty and students are encouraged to examine how the university shapes our experience; how the institution functions as more than a backdrop to what we do here. In the course "Collecting East Asia at the Krannert Art Museum," we shall examine how the university museum has constructed images of East Asia through its collecting practices, which began in earnest in 1910. We shall do archival research that pertains to the collection, but we shall also look at the objects that are currently on view in Krannert. We shall look at exhibition practices in other museums for comparison. To support our research, we shall investigate problems inherent in exhibiting East Asian art objects. In the end, we shall make preliminary plans for the reinstallation of the Asian Gallery. Students will have the opportunity to select objects for exhibition and to write labels to accompany them. Focusing primarily on American examples, but exploring a wider transatlantic context, this course will approach the relationship between words and images in a range of ways. Moving from the mid nineteenth- to the mid-twentieth century, we will explore collaborations between authors and visual artists; the publication of short stories and other literature in magazines and journals where they are accompanied by illustrations; cover art, advertisements and other forms of imagery; and the broader visual culture that surrounds literary works. The course is taught in collaboration with Professors John Fagg and Sara Wood of the University of Birmingham in the U.K. and incorporates online discussions and projects.Graduate Section.
