Section Title:
Planning Without Growth
Section Info:
What happens when we remove the assumption of growth from our plans? How do communities that are not growing adapt to and plan for these realities? What happens when we examine these phenomena outside of areas that have received lots of attention? This seminar examines the ways in which the idea of growth in many forms underlies planning and related urban theories, and asks the question of how communities that are not growing should respond. As a seminar, course time will be split between student-led discussions on various dimensions of the roles of growth within planning theory and practice and engaging with similar questions "on the ground." Specifically, we will work with a neighborhood-level community organization in Decatur, Illinois to examine course themes and will work with community stakeholders to develop a planning response to local issues.
