This course will analyze several plays of some of the main theater authors of Spanish Golden Age, such as Lope de Vega, Miguel de Cervantes, Tirso de Molina and Caldern de la Barca, and will focus on two main objectives. First, it will study these works as performance, by looking at the features and technical innovations that caused the Spanish Golden Age Theater to become a successful social spectacle. The second objective is to study the early modern Spanish society as it is reflected in the texts, paying special attention to marginalized groups and other social issues that can still be relevant today.
