Russian 199 Topic - Death and the Meaning of Life: The Death of Ivan Ilyich Read Tolstoys short novel about a judge who comes to reevaluate the meaning of his life as he dies from a mysterious illness. View films about the stigma of disease and death, including Philadelphia and Kurosawas Ikiru. Explore artworks that visually represent illness and suffering. Participate in an online Tolstoy game, and lead a discussion group with your friends. 2nd half of Spring Semester.

Section Info:
Topic: Russian Language and Culture for Scientists and Engineers. Course in both Russian language and culture. Students will be introduced to the Russian grammatical system and develop elementary, situation-specific reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills. Half the course will be devoted to Russian and Soviet culture and history, with an emphasis on the role of science, technology and engineering as manifest in Russian, Soviet, and post-Soviet film, literature and the arts. Students will pick their own areas of particular interest for further independent reading, in connection with which they will submit a written report at the end of the semester.
