CEE 598 SRC - Shared Rail Corridor Engineering & Operations Prerequisites: CEE 408, 409, 410, 411, 498 HSR or permission from the instructor. Increased speed, frequency and/or expansion of rail passenger service in North America is expected to make substantial use of lines shared with freight trains. Although freight and passenger trains have shared infrastructure since the beginning of rail transport, the engineering design and operational practices of each have become increasingly specialized and divergent over the past five decades. North American plans for such shared infrastructure operations pose engineering, operational and institutional challenges that are unique in the world.

Transportation Soil Stabilization This graduate course aims to introduce the theory, techniques and practical applications of chemical and mechanical stabilization of geomaterials ? soils and aggregates/rocks ? used in the construction and maintenance of transportation facilities, i.e., roads, railroads, and airfields. Chemical stabilization includes the use of chemicals, admixtures such as lime and fly ash, and emulsions as compaction aids to soils, as binders and water repellents, and as a means of modifying the behavior of soil. Mechanical stabilization deals with the use of non-biodegradable reinforcement, such as geosynthetics and fibers, of geomaterials to improve strength.
