Topic: Aristotle's Ethics and Politics. Through close readings of the Eudemian Ethics, Nicomachean Ethics, Magna Moralia and Politics, we shall investigate key themes in Aristotle?s ethical and political theory, the relationship between the various ethical treatises attributed to Aristotle in antiquity, and the interrelation of ethics and politics in his thought. Required texts 1. J. Barnes, A Very Short Introduction to Aristotle (Cambridge University Press) 2. Aristole, The Eudemian Ethics (Oxford University Press; trans. A. Kenny) 3. Aristole, The Nicomachean Ethics (Oxford University Press; trans. D. Ross; rev. L. Brown) Evaluation - Final grades for undergraduates enrolled in the course will be based on the following factors: 1. Class attendance and participation (10%). Attendance at all class meetings is required. More than three unexcused absences will have the effect of lowering your final grade by one-half letter grade (e.g., from an A to a B+, or from a C+ to a C) 2. Five 1?2 page papers on assigned topics over the course of the semester (15%). 3. Two longer (6?8 page) papers on approved topics (25% each). 4. A comprehensive final exam (25%). Graduate students enrolled in the class will be required to submit a final paper of roughly 15?20 pages, which will substitute for both the second longer paper and the final exam.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
