Examines specific topics in Latina/Latino Studies not addressed in regularly offered courses. Examples include theories of ethnic identity, historical foundations, cultural expression, and relevant topics in public policy studies of Latina/Latino communities.

This course will examine the social, political, cultural history of Puerto Ricans in the diaspora, dating from 1898 to the present. We will examine the historic and political settings that have shaped. Puerto Rican migration, as well as the constructions of Puerto Rican national and diaspora identity through historical readings, literature, and film.

Topic: "Oral History: Theory, Methods, Practice." This course will introduce students to the theory and practice of oral history. Students will not only learn about oral history as a research methodology, they will also receive training in collecting oral histories. Themes include important debates in oral history; designing an oral history project and interviewing; methodological and ethical challenges; interpreting oral source material; oral history and trauma; historical memory; and the politics of archiving.
