Advanced Reporting Topics

Credit: 3 hours.

Advanced reporting projects or techniques, with separate sections for a varying array of topics such as investigative reporting, immersion journalism, literary journalism, business and financial journalism, online publishing, radio news features, sports writing, broadcast documentary production, digital journalism, and photo journalism.

May be repeated in the same or subsequent semesters if topics vary. Prerequisite: JOUR 400.

Each class will include twelve highly qualified journalism students and as many as four reporters from The News-Gazette. They will meet weekly in evening narrative feature writing seminars that will be a real-world professional workshop. They will do extensive reporting and writing outside the classroom. Professor Harrington, three-time Pulitzer feature writing nominee at The Washington Post, will serve as the teacher introducing seminar participants to the highest and best examples of literary feature writing and as editor for the stories students and reporters will report and write each semester. Restriction(s): Restricted to Agr & Environmental Cmc & Educ or News-Editorial or Broadcast Journalism or Agricultural Communications major(s). Not intended for students with Freshman class standing.

Upper-division journalism students will learn online, mobile, broadcast, print and social media skills while serving as members of the coordinating team of producers and editors for a real-world, multi-course project that will preview and cover the 2012 general election in non-traditional ways. Instead of focusing on the horse race, I-Elect will focus on issues and on devising unique journalistic methods to increase issue relevance among students. In addition to scheduled class sessions, students must be available to work on election night, Tuesday, Nov. 6. The course will conclude shortly after the election.
