Section Info:
Topic: Broadcast Voice and Professional Performance. The course is designed to teach students the basics of broadcasting, newswriting, journalism theory, vocal and performance skills?for radio and TV. It focuses on broadcast voice, presentation skills, appearance and vocal criticism. Students learn that to be successful in a professional broadcast world, they must do much more than look/sound good on TV or radio. However, they also learn that voice, presentation and appearance play a large role in a successful broadcast journalism career. First Year Discovery Program Course. Section Info:
Using the context of Web-based applications, mobile applications, online video, social media, and gaming, this course covers topics fundamental to understanding new media forms. These include an introduction to the operation of the Web, the Internet, Web development, search engines, digital media formats, online media distribution platforms and networks, online audiences, scripting, and user interface design. This class is intended as a first course in digital media for those interested in both the practical skills and the critical intellectual foundations relevant to the Internet and new media. Meets with ADV 199 and MACS 199 Note: Students must register for both the lecture (AL1) and one discussion section (AD1, AD2, AD3 or AD4).

Section Info:
Multimedia election project Experience the excitement of a presidential election year while also learning cutting-edge techniques in multimedia journalism. Students will learn online, mobile, broadcast, print and social media techniques needed to participate along with more advanced classes in a real-world project that will preview and cover the 2012 general election in a non-traditional way designed to increase issue relevance among students. Students must be available to attend some Tuesday night meetings in addition to their scheduled class sessions and to work on election night, Tuesday, Nov. 6. Sustainable and Diverse
Section Info:
Sustainable and Diverse Journalism of the Future. How does the media and journalism practice sustainability and diversity? How does the media and journalism present sustainability and diversity? This class will explore the many ways that sustainability is possible within American journalism and how diversity is crucial to the success and continued health of journalism today. Using personal multimedia journalism as our method, we will explore novel ways to express and explore sustainability and diversity. In this class we will create personal blogs, books, posters, videos and other media types that explore sustainability and diversity in modern journalism -- all to help us explore how we might create the diverse, sustainable journalism of the future. No prior journalism or multimedia skills are required for this hands-on semester experience. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshman.
