Rebirth and Afterlife: The French Renaissance, Its Representation, and the Idea of History In this course we will pursue several goals : during the first half of the semester we will discuss major texts of the French sixteenth century, all present on the M.A. reading list. During the second half we will turn our critical attentiona to the representation of this tumultuous period?firmly setting France on its course toward modernity?in fiction and film from the seventeenth century to the present. A continued reflection about the idea of history will be the unifying theme of this course. The Renaissance not only saw the birth of modern historiography but was also haunted by positioning itself vis--vis Antiquity and the Ancients. While the status and role of history is at issue in all major texts of the French sixteenth century, the choice of later authors and filmmakers to situate their works in this period raises its own questions about the representation and use of history. Texts by Rabelais, Marguerite de Navarre, Du Bellay, Ronsard, Montaigne, Mme de Lafayette, Dumas, Yourcenar among others. Readings and class discussion in French.
