Section Title:
Mad Love & Crimes of Passion
Section Info:
Mad Love and Crimes of Passion: The Cinema of Franois Truffaut. Are Women magic? asks a character in one of Truffaut's films and the viewer familiar with his cinema recognizes that this is the question of almost everyone one of the creations of the favorite director of the French New Wave. Truffaut's cinema is autobiographical and obsessive, continuously searching for the enigmatic power of sexuality, while humorously attempting to resist its power. Some of the topics this course will examine are: Auteur cinema and its lessons, the semiotics of dialogue versus image, collaborations with writers, and composers, especially Georges Delerue, the directors of photography Henri Deca, Raoul Coutard and Nestor Almendros. We will also consider Truffaut's apprenticeship with Hitchcock and Fellini and his lessons for Pedro Almodovar. Meets with CWL 395 and MACS 395.
