Literary and historical study of science fiction from Mary Shelley to Ursula K. LeGuin with particular emphasis on the achievement of science fiction as a literary form in the romance tradition.

Texts for this course will be drawn from a variety of early and contemporary authors, including Mary Shelley, H.G. Wells, Kate Wilhelm, Ray Bradbury, and Margaret Atwood. Our approach will be discussion- and project-based, but will also likely include response papers and a midterm exam.
