Physical properties and classification of intact rock, theories of rock failure, state of stress in the earth's crust, stresses and deformations around underground openings assuming elastic, plastic, and time-dependent behavior; effect of geologic discontinuities on rock strength; stability analyses in rock.

Prerequisite: CEE 483 and TAM 451.
