Topic: The Matter of American Culture. This graduate seminar explores the meanings of matter in American culture from nation formation to the Civil War, and is designed as an introduction to material culture studies. Begins by engaging with the objects that structured relationships between Native Americans and Europeans during the colonial period and ends by examining the relation between bodies and things in the context of the slave trade. Explores a broad range of approaches to the study of matter, drawing on the writing of Jane Bennett, Bill Brown, Martin Heidegger, Bruno Latour, Jules Prown, and many others. Incorporates period literature as well as first-hand study of objects in area museums (including relevant contemporary works of art and material culture). There will be at least one field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago.
