Topic: This seminar examines primitivism in French art from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Primitivism may be defined as the desire for a simpler life, particularly as it was perceived to exist in pre-modern societies. We shall begin with some historical and theoretical accounts of primitivism, and then take up a number of case studies concerning individual artists, including Delacroix, Ingres, Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso.
