TITLE: Women Activists of the 1960s. 3 hours. During the 1960s, women in and outside of colleges were activists and leaders in diverse social movements that served as sites for liberation struggles. This Discovery course will examine the lives, activism, leadership, experiences, and legacies of women activists in multiple 1960s movements (feminist/women?s liberation, student free speech, anti-war, African Am, Mexican Am, Asian Am, Native Am, gay-lesbian liberation, migrant farm workers. The course will assist students in developing greater knowledge and skills that will promote cultural competence, understanding, and appreciation of the important contributions that women activists from diverse backgrounds made and the diverse issues which mobilized them, including but not limited to women?s status in the family, education, labor force, and society; free speech, civil rights, war, and inequalities of gender, race, ethnicity, class, age, sexuality and their intersections. No late adds to class after start of first class without written permission of professor at bmbarnet@uiuc.edu. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course
