No graduate credit. Approved for both letter and S/U grading. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours. Prerequisite: Junior standing; 3.0 grade average for most internships; PS 101 and one 300-level political science course appropriate to internship program; acceptance by faculty sponsor.

Students in this course will have the opportunity to gain experience working in the Champaign County Public Defender's office. Participants will work on-site at the Public Defender's office assisting attorneys with their cases and observing courtroom hearings. In the classroom component, students will integrate readings, research, and experience with the American legal system into a series of assignments. Topics to be covered include: defendants' Sixth Amendment rights; criminal law procedural requirements; duties and obligations of a Public Defender; statutes regulating legal representation; and case law interpreting the rights and obligations of criminal defendants and their counsel. 3 credit hours. Department Approval Required. Not intended for students with Freshman or Sophomore class standing. Internship courses are subject to college and departmental restrictions. See an advisor for details.
