What does democracy require of citizens? This course will explore three models of democracy--republicanism, liberalism, and elitism. We will discuss democratic theorists? expectations of ordinary citizens in each of the models, and will investigate what political scientists know about the ways in which citizens do (and do not) meet them.

Intro to Environmtl Security
Section Info:
This course provides an introduction to the relationship between human-induced environmental stress and security, with special focus on environmentally-related civil and international violence. The course helps students understand the ways in which various environmental changes have consequences for the likelihood of local political violence, civil wars, and international conflict. The impact of war on the environment is also addressed as are various mechanisms for conflict management. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
