576: Ecology and Literature: Catastrophes, Critique of Civilization and the Idea of Man (from the 19th century to the present) Natural disasters and man-made environmental catastrophes provoke literature to reflect the meaning of humankind in history and the state of society. Wilhelm Raabe's novel 'Pfisters Mhle' as well as Theodor Storm's 'Schimmelreiter' and the critique of ecology in the 1980th in literary essays by Christa Wolf, Gnter Grass and Volker Braun as well as W.G. Sebald's novel 'Die Ringe des Saturn' for instance challenge political, social, religious and scientific (especially due to the industrialization and technological progress) concepts of their time. The Critique of Civilization and Society find their expressions in different genres and writing styles. There is also a noticeable connection between ecological topics and poetological reflections in these texts. The main focus in this course lies on the connection between content (i.e. ecology as a topic) and writing strategies. Considering different approaches to Ecocriticism, we will also discuss if there is a category 'ecological writing'. Texts: Wilhelm Raabe: Pfisters Mhle; Theodor Storm: Der Schimmelreiter; W.G. Sebald: Die Ringe des Saturn; Christa Wolf: ?Strfall. Nachrichten eines Tages?; Josef Haslinger: ?Phi Phi Island. Ein Bericht?. More texts will be provided.
