Section Info:
496: What?s left? ?Wende?, German Unity and the GDR in literature since 1989 The end of the GDR and the subsequent sociopolitical change influenced the German literature of the past 20 years in a variety of ways. Female and male writers from East and West Germany such as Christa Wolf, Thomas Brussig, Ingo Schulze, Monika Maron, Thomas Rosenlcher, Gnter Grass, Jens Sparschuh, Rolf Hochhuth felt the need to discuss the urgent conflicts of their time. Their prose, drama and essays deal with the shift of mindsets and the development of a collective memory of the dictatorship in the GDR and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. We will study basic texts, essential topics and genres from different generations of female and male writers. We will read the texts in their historical context (e.g. the discourse about the alleged 'colonization' of the GDR by the FRG; 'Ostalgie') and discuss the role of literature in society (e.g. the idea of the 'littrature engage') and public literary debates. Texts: Thomas Brussig: Helden wie wir: Grass, Gu?nter: Ein Schnppchen namens DDR. Letzte Reden vorm Glockengelut (in excerpts); Rolf Hochhuth: Wessis in Weimar; Monika Maron: Stille Zeile sechs; Thomas Rosenlcher: Ostgezeter. Beitrge zur Schimpfkultur; Ingo Schulze: Neue Leben (in excerpts); Uwe Tellkamp: Der Turm. Geschichte aus einem versunkenen Land (in excerpts); Christa Wolf: Was bleibt.
