Topic: Superficial Acts: Graffiti, Murals and the Materiality of Surfaces. From Bronx walls to the Berlin wall, from ancient palatial decorations to Spray-can art, murals and graffiti have been objects of aesthetic contemplation, revolutionary political tools, and vehicles for identity formation, especially within the problematic realm of the modern era's "public sphere." This seminar will examine the scope of artistic interactions with the materiality of wall surfaces. While most class discussions will focus on modern and contemporary examples, and particularly those from Latin America or by US Latinas/os, seminar participants will be encouraged to seek out research examples from their own areas and periods of interest. The seminar will examine the scholarship on murals and graffiti from a two fold perspective: on the one hand, a critical review of the tropes and histories in the writing of murals and graffiti (for example, a "peoples art," criminology of gangs, or sociological context of urban development). On the other, the seminar seeks a reexamination of this tired, defaced, yet still popular subject, via readings in new materialism.
