Topic: Visual Cultures of Modern Latin America. This course introduces students to the major, critical debates concerning the art history of Latin America from the early years of Independence through the first decades of the twentieth century. The course is not a survey, however, the most significant stylistic and thematic developments of several Latin American countries will be examined. The visual materials to be analyzed will range from drawings and paintings to popular prints and performance, from photography and film to murals and urban planning. In particular, the course will investigate the constructions of modernity and modernization within the context of Latin Americas. No previous art history required.
