Topic: Diversity: From Social Policy to Intellectual Dynamic. This course explores the institutional emergence of "diversity" discourse in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a liberal institutional response to the challenges posed by various egalitarian social movements of the 1960s. It will explore the discourses of "revolution," "compensation," and "affirmative action" through which it struggled and developed. It then shifts to the 1980s and 1990s, which saw the end of long-standing liberal social programs under a rightward shift in the country's politics and the framing of cultural discourse between "multiculturalism" and "political correctness." Finally, it explores the impact of the end of the Cold War, the USA's emergence as the world's sole superpower, and the widespread adoption of the rhetoric and practice of diversity in corporate America and as federal government practice, regardless of party affiliation. But apart from debates about social policy, "diversity" has found increasing usefulness as an analytical perspective in the humanities. The remaining part of this course will explore an area of analysis that has increasingly adopted the questions of diversity discourse - the study of "empire" in world history. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
