Topic: Introduction to Environmental Security. This course provides an introduction to the relationship between human-induced environmental stress and security, with special focus on environmentally-related civil and international violence. The course helps students understand the ways in which various environmental changes have consequences for the likelihood of local political violence, civil wars, and international conflict. The impact of war on the environment is also addressed as are various mechanisms for conflict management. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshman. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.

The Politics of National Parks. This seminar looks at the political and policy issues around protecting the environment in national parks. We will consider the politics around creating such parks, the local interests that support or oppose them, the politics of managing them effectively, and policy questions such as the value of wilderness, ecosystem management, and endangered species protection. As a seminar, it emphasizes critical reading skills, writing, and discussion. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to first time freshmen.
