Introduction to theoretical aspects of French phonetics and phonology, research methods, and pronunciation exercises on speaking styles in French.

Prerequisite: FR 213 or equivalent.

Tuesday sessions consist of lectures and small-group exercises on dialectal and L1/L2 learner varieties of French. Thursday sessions are centered around individual listening, speaking, and analyzing stylistic variation, common errors, and stereotypes of French pronunciation in movies and the media. The course builds on FR 213 or other practical introductions to phonetics and phonology. Background in linguistics is favored, but not required. Examinations: midterm and final paper.
