The objective of this course is to introduce students to the theoretical and practical aspects of the sounds of French. Tuesday sessions consist of lectures and small-group exercises on dialectal and L1/L2 learner varieties of French. Thursday sessions are centered around individual listening, speaking, and analyzing stylistic variation, common errors, and stereotypes of French pronunciation in movies and the media. The course builds on FR 213 or other practical introductions to phonetics and phonology. Background in linguistics is favored, but not required. Examinations: midterm and final paper.
