Graphismes a la Francaise: Bande Dessinee et Cinema d animation Of primary interest to this course is the way in which contemporary (1990s- 2000s) French culture negotiates its identity and anxieties through graphic media, particularly the bande dessinee (comic book albums and graphic novels) and animated cinema. In order to better understand contemporary production the class will also examine important representatives of the Franco-Belgian tradition throughout the 20th century (Cohl, Herge, Goscinny & Uderzo, Laloux, etc). The course includes, but is not limited to cases of adaptation. BD include: Tardi, La Debauche; Bilal, La Trilogie Nikopol,; Satrapi, Persepolis; David B, L Asencion du Haut Mal, Sfar, Le Chat du Rabin, Crecy, Periode glaciere. Films include: Volckmann, Renaissance: Paris 2054; Ocelot, Kiriou et la sorciere; Bilal, Immortal (ad vitam); Chomet, Les Triplettes de Belleville; Besson, Arthur et les minimoys. Theoretical readings include: Peeters, Groensteen, Faure. Secondary/Historical readings include: Screech, Beaty.
