Topic: Design for Non-Majors. Design Thinking Laboratory. For more information (http://designthinkinglabatillinois.tumblr.com/). Increasingly, the notion of interdisciplinary work has created a flurry of excitement in many fields of study. The synthesis of different modes of practice, discipline-specific languages, and complex networks of knowledge require common tools and frameworks that will facilitate interdisciplinary activity. Design is inherently a field that requires the synthesis of many often discordant bodies of knowledge and stakeholders. Imagine the complex network of people, ideas, specialists, and resources it takes to design and produce anything in one's immediate vicinity: the chair you're sitting on, the clothes you're wearing, the media through you're consuming this very text. Design is not the specific knowledge of any one of these singular moving parts, but it is the thinking and creativity that allows for the synthesis all of these different pieces. The utility of Design thinking becomes a tool that might indeed be useful for anyone trying to solve any kind of problem in the 21st century. This is a course about learning how to think in more strategic, holistic, and creative ways, and how to effectively communicate these ideas to others. It is about both thinking and making, and thinking through making. The semester is divided up into several themed design workshops, or charrettes. Each charrette begins with a provocation lecture that identifies the topic of the charette and outlines the framework for solving a design problem. Students in the course work on-site with instructors and guest designers during the course meeting times for the remaining duration of the charette to design solutions. Each charette builds in duration and complexity and lasts anywhere from two class periods up to four weeks. Access to a laptop for the in-class charrettes is required for this course.
