Topic: Introduction to Design Through Craft. Introduction to the elements, principles, and processes of design. Students will investigate basic design concepts in five three-week workshops in craft/material studies. Design strategies will be introduced via a survey of basic techniques in metalworking, glassmaking, bookmaking, ceramics, and fiber. This course is designed for the non-art major who seeks an introductory hands on art making experience. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.

Topic: Visual Language, Visual Culture. This course utilizes digital photography to explore the construction and reading of images as visual language. The student will learn to recognize parallels between image and language grammar to deconstruct our increasingly visual culture. Students will need a digital camera of some sort (from a cell phone to a SLR!). Students are expected to pay the lab fee required of all students taking photography. Needed materials will include a digital camera, an external storage device for images, per print costs when printing in the digital print lab. First Year Discovery Program Course. Topic: Expressive & Creative Painting and Drawing. Using a variety of materials the students will create imagery in drawing and painting techniques. Drawing exercises will include contour, gesture and story illustration and progressive/ automatic drawing. Students will be asked to respond to a variety of subject matter. Painting techniques will include watercolor, Wet into Wet and the English method. Acrylic painting methods will include direct painting and washes. Energy and individual expression will be expected. Found Object / Found Art
Section Info:
Topic: Found Object/Found Art: Content and context in painting, through non-traditional genres. This course is open to all, and requires no prerequisites. It will focus on the use of alternative materials and experimental techniques in painting. Students will explore traditional art materials combined with modeled forms, reliefs, cut-outs, collaged elements, and found objects. We will discuss artists with a history of innovative and non-conventional approaches to art, including vernacular art by self-taught artists working outside of traditional art movements and genres. Popular culture will also be a sphere of inquiry, where we will discuss and explore such expressions as tattoos, sideshow banners, alters, religious ritual, and advertising. Other topics might include comix, graffiti, public murals and the use of distorted and grotesque figuration in painting. First year Discovery Program course. Registration restricted to freshman. Topic: Understanding Visual Culture. Interdisciplinary methods in recognizing and understanding meaning of a wide range of visual messages in the arts, design, and culture, with emphasis on critical thinking and analysis. Topics include: visual perception, visual persuasion, the visual interpretation of time and space, humor. Contemporary art and design are explored through the use of semiotics and historical, cultural and ethical aesthetic and technical perspectives. This section for Chancellor's Scholars only; other students may only enroll with consent of instructor and the Campus Honors Program.
